The Art of Pivoting and Multitasking

Summing up myself.

For those that have friends that are musicians, it’s a known fact that most, if not all, have day jobs that help to supplement rent, food, heat, sanity, etc.

I was no different.

I’ve been a musician for over 35 years. For many of those years, that was it- touring, pouring my heart out in song, and making a pretty decent living doing nothing but performing somewhere around 250 shows per year both in an acoustic duo and as a solo artist.

Sound like a lot? If you’re reading this, you most likely have a day job where, with weekends subtracted, you work just about the same amount of days in a year. We all put our time in.

After basically missing the first three years of seeing my daughter grow up because of my schedule, it became necessary to make a change.

I’m a pretty quick study. I’ve worked in the corporate technology sector for 20 years or so, becoming an authority on just about every aspect of it. I’d list them, but rest assured, I can build a very large network environment, implement the latest and greatest whatever is out there, and build the team to support it.

Thankfully, more than half of those years were from the comfort of my home working remotely, with my personal dress code consisting of flannel pants and a t-shirt. My office? Most of the time, it was my home recording studio.

At what I’ll call the height of my technology career, I worked two full-time jobs at the same time for completely different companies while writing music for film and television, all in the same eight-hour day…from home.

I’m going to write a post at some point about how it doesn’t take me eight hours to do a full day’s work.

Oh, I also played live shows, released a few records, and did a bunch of other things at the same time.

The best thing about it all? I was no longer missing my kids’ life events. Sports, music, anything that was on the calendar, I was attending as a pretty proud dad. The money was great, the perks even better, and once I found my forte` in the never-ending menu of technological job options, the schedule wasn’t terrible.

Through it all, I’ve been a writer.

Songs? Yeah, sure, I’ve written my fair share which you can hear wherever you listen to music. Outside of that, I’ve written everything from articles to blog posts, newsletters, press releases, web content, and even product descriptions. The list goes on and on.

I’m a bit more selective these days, but writing is a passion. Life continues to provide the experience necessary.

I write because I love it, oh, and because I get paid for it. So, there’s that.
